Johann Sebastian Bach - "Puer natus in Bethlehem"

Puer natus in Bethlehem,
A child is born in Bethlehem,
Unde gaudet Jerusalem.
Exult for joy Jerusalem,
Alleluia! Alleluia!

Hic jacet in præsepio,
Lo, He who reigns above the skies
Qui regnat sine termino.
There, in a manger lowly, lies.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

Cognovit bos et asinus,
The ox and ass in neighbouring stall
Quod puer erat Dominus.
See in that Child the Lord of all.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

Reges de Sabâ veniunt,
And kingly pilgrims, long foretold,
Aurum, thus, myrrhum offerunt.
From East bring incense, myrrh, and gold,
Alleluia! Alleluia!

De matre natus virgine,
He comes, a maiden mother's Son,
Sine virili femine;
Yet earthly father hath He none
Alleluia! Alleluia!

Sine serpentis vulnere,
And, from the serpent's poison free,
De nostro venit sanguine;
He owned our blood and pedigree
Alleluia! Alleluia!

In carne nobis similis,
Our feeble flesh and His the same,
Peccato sed dissimilis;
Our sinless kinsman He became,
Alleluia! Alleluia!

Ut redderet nos homines,
That we, from deadly thrall set free,
Deo et sibi similes.
Like Him, and so like God, should be.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

In hoc natali gaudio,
Come then, and on this natal day,
Benedicamus Domino:
Rejoice before the Lord and pray
Alleluia! Alleluia!

Laudetur sancta Trinitas,
And to the Holy One in Three
Deo dicamus gratias.
Give praise and thanks eternally
Alleluia! Alleluia!
