Alma Redemptoris Mater

Alma Redemptoris Mater,
quae pervia caeli porta manes,
Et stella maris,
succurre cadenti
surgere qui curat populo:
Tu quae genuisti,
natura mirante,
tuum sanctum Genitorem:
Virgo prius ac posterius,
Gabrielis ab ore
sumens illud Ave,
peccatorum miserere.

Sweet Mother of the Redeemer,
that passage to heaven,
gate of the morning,
and star of the sea:
Assist the fallen,
lift up, you who cure, the people:
you who bore to the wonderment of nature,
your holy Creator.
Virgin before and after,
who received from Gabriel
that joyful greeting,
have mercy on us sinners.

This Marian hymn is sung after Compline during the Liturgical seasons of Advent and Epiphany, when it replaces the Salve Regina. The Church prizes devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary so highly, and deems it so necessary, that she requires all her priests and religious to sing a hymn to her as the last thing they do every single day.

This hymn focuses on the happy privilege of Mary being chosen to be the mother of God ("who received from Gabriel"), and how she gave birth to the Redeemer. Because of this privilege, she has become our hope ("star of the sea"). So it is most fitting to hear this hymn during Advent and Epiphany, when the Church wants us to meditate on those very mysteries.

Thứ Tư 8-12 Lễ kính Đức Mẹ Vô Nhiễm Nguyên Tội

Lời Chúa:
Luca 1:26-38

Trinh nữ ấy tên là Ma-ri-a. Sứ thần vào nhà trinh nữ và nói: "Mừng vui lên, hỡi Đấng đầy ân sủng, Đức Chúa ở cùng bà." Nghe lời ấy, bà rất bối rối, và tự hỏi lời chào như vậy có nghĩa gì. Sứ thần liền nói: "Thưa bà Ma-ri-a, xin đừng sợ, vì bà đẹp lòng Thiên Chúa.

Our Call to Holiness - 7

The genesis of our personal holiness attains a most critical threshold with the beginning of contemplation wherein the very nature of our personal encounter with God is transformed. Our loving receptivity, having passed through the growth process of being "first the shoot, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear" (Mk 4:27 28), is now ready for harvest. Instead of God communing with us principally through the mediation of images, objects, emotions as he had previously done in discursive meditation, he now communicates himself directly to the soul in contemplation. God's transforming and consuming love thus becomes ever more operative in this immediate encounter. This more interiorized phase of transformation is accompanied by a radical intensification directly by God himself of the soul's own loving receptivity towards him as he is in himself. This affects not only prayer, but attains every aspect of life.

Our Call to Holiness - 6

Progress in holiness, then, is characterized by an intensification of our receptive stance before God. "Night and day, while he sleeps and when he is awake, the seed is sprouting and growing. How? He does not know" (Mk 4:27).

God himself nurtures our growth in receptivity gradually and mysteriously, often for a long time even without our being aware of the fact. In each individual this seed of receptivity sprouts and grows in a uniquely personalized manner. Its emergence is specifically tailored by God to our individual personality and vocation. He uses all the particular events, circumstances and persons that affect us in any way as instruments through which to quicken our contemplative orientation to life.
